Group Offers Money for Reports on Left-Wing Faculty

Morning Edition, January 19, 2006 · A conservative alumni group is offering to pay students at the University of California-Los Angeles to monitor professors who have been branded as left-wing radicals. Faculty at UCLA are alarmed over what some are calling a campus witchhunt.

This is facism, in the same way the attack on persons who might criticize Israel in the Columbia middle eastern studies department was facism.

Nevertheless, it's kind of funny. Somebody else paying students to enroll in your course probably doesn't hurt faculty productivity. Somebody taking really good notes might help transforming a course into a book. Getting the student's questions down right might also help a scholarly endeavor.

The damaging thing is to actually read a transcript of what you've said. The Dodger has read court depositions as well as transcripts of the Dodger's legislative and rulemaking testimony. Somehow, a discussion that sounded ok going out, where people seemed to listen and nod their heads in understanding, looks nearly incoherent when the actual words are written. Maybe the same would be true of these lectures.

There was a tradition in Berkeley of transcribed lecture notes being sold in the bookstore, the Dodger remembers they were called Phi Bates [the street was Bates].
