Anthony Tyler might have been styling himself as a vigilante Sunday when, armed with a handgun, he kicked in the front door of a Detroit man's home after a female acquaintance reportedly told Tyler the man had raped her.
However, the man was armed, too. He and Tyler pulled their triggers.
Tyler died. The man was wounded in the knee.
On Monday, Detroit Police weren't calling it vigilantism, but they were warning people about taking the law into their own hands.
Investigators spent the day trying sort out the details, while Tyler's family mourned.
"If he wasn't so willing to help her, my son would be alive," Tyler's mother, Gloria Douglas, said as she choked back tears and tried to finish a plate of scrambled eggs and grits. "I feel like he may have been set up. I don't know her and I don't know what happened."
The home's 40-year-old occupant was in good condition Monday at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit. He has not been charged.
