Detroit Population

In left circles in Detroit it's fashionable to call the events of 1967 the "rebellion." Non-lefties call it the riot or the troubles. Certainly a lot changed in Detroit in following years. In this post, BrooklynDodger limits the focus to the notion that the event was central to white flight to the suburbs which has devastated the economic landscape of the central city.

That bastion of liberal thought, the Detroit News, provides the attached graphic to inform that thinking. Detroit's population was shrinking from 1950-1960. Without a semi-log plot, it appears the slope steepened in the period following 1967, but maybe not dramatically. Whatever was driving the move out to the suburbs may before 1967 may have intensified independent of the psychological effect of 1967 events.
